German
Middle High German I
(Medieval short fiction) The course provides an introduction to Middle High German, the language spoken in Southern Germany between c. 1150 and 1350. The course offers a contrastive study of medieval and modern German, and also provides an introduction to central concepts and realities of medieval German literature and society.
Middle High German II
(Medieval epic fiction). Students will study one epic text (e.g. Hartmann von Aue's Erec) as an example of Arthurian romance. Texts will be read in the original German, with the aid of translations. The course is intended for students with an advanced knowledge of German.
Italian
Petrarch
This course offers a general overview of Petrarch's writings, and of his significance in the context of Italian literature. This will be followed by a brief study of his Secretum as background to an in-depth examination of the poems in the Canzoniere.
Boccaccio
This course considers Bocaccio's Decameron in the content of 14th-century Italian history and culture. It offers a textual analysis of his stories, and looks at ways in which he developed the short-story, both from a thematic and from a linguistic perspective.
Dante
This course introduces the work of Dante in the context of 14-century Italian literature, and considers in particular Dante's justification for his depiction of sinners in the Inferno, the first cantica of his Divine Comedy.
